Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Program Director, the ESL Contract Instructor is responsible for performing a combination of college-level classroom instruction and program administrative duties. The contract instructor must be able to teach a variety of skills and subjects to a variety of English proficiency levels; demonstrate teaching excellence, knowledge of subject matter, and coordination skills; contribute to curriculum and program improvement as well as problem solving within the Institute. TYPICAL DUTIES Teaches a variety of skill areas and levels, as assigned by the program director, to meet program needs. Prepares and presents course content in keeping with the course title, including a final test or evaluation. Maintains a degree of quality instruction which ensures a beneficial learning experience for students. Keeps accurate records of student attendance and submits these as scheduled. Keeps accurate records of student progress (grades) and completes grade reports according to instructions and timetables. Develops curriculum at all levels, especially in new content areas. Provides a syllabus and attendance policy according to program guidelines for each class taught. Uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations. Participates in/coordinates orientation activities, including testing and placement. Advises students about ALI TOEFL waiver requirements and is knowledgeable about SDSU admission procedures. Collaborates with SDSU admissions with regard to ALI TOEFL waiver and conditional acceptance letter. Ombudsperson experience. Attends staff and professional development meetings. Functions as a skill area coordinator with corresponding administrative duties and/or assumes responsibility for other specialized activities. Attends certificate ceremonies and other social activities; may conduct field trips. Coordinates and/or supervises special programs. Participates in program policy decisions. Ensures a smooth transition to university/college life for international students.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree, preferably in TESL/TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field. Minimum two years' of experience teaching in a university-based IEP (Intensive English Program). Minimum one year of experience in student pre-university advising related to meeting English proficiency and college/university requirements. Fingerprinting clearance results are required prior to hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience coordinating some administrative component of an academic ESL Program. Experience with current educational technology. Experience with Blackboard or similar learning management systems. Experience with developing new curriculum. Demonstrated excellence in ESL teaching in a similar institute.
