Perform a mouse and rat transthoracic, Doppler and contrast echocardiography by using Vivo 770 and Siemens 512 Aquson Sequoia systems and variety of laboratory tasks and experiments that directly support the primary research focus. Employ surgical and molecular techniques to make detailed observations, quantitatively analyze data, and interpret results. Work independently and especially in collaboration with others on projects. Investigate and develop new methods for project advancement. Plan and perform mouse and rat transthoracic, Doppler, stress and contrast echocardiography. Direct report to Drs. William Chilian, Chair, Integrative Medical Sciences and Vahagn Ohanyan, Assistant Professor, Integrative Medical Sciences.

Principal Functional Responsibilities
Plan and perform mouse and rat transthoracic, Doppler, stress and contrast echocardiography.

Assist with echocardiographic analysis, particularly by calculating measurements of cardiac function and myocardial blood flow.

Perform surgical preparation of mice and rats for various cardiovascular studies:
1. Open-chest survival surgeries
2. Myocardial infarction, repetitive myocardial ischemia
3. Transaortic banding and de-banding
4. Vessel isolation and cannulation, and blood pressure measurement by using 1F solid pressure catheters models
5. Post-surgical care of animals and collection, preparation, and analysis of mouse rat tissue samples

Maintain general laboratory supplies, equipment, and detailed records of experiments and chemical and tissue sample inventories.

Provide technical training to students and visiting researchers as necessary.

Education/Degrees: Bachelor’s degree in biological science or equivalent experience

Experience: Laboratory research experience preferred; 2-3 years of surgical experience and animal care experience preferred

Key Skills and Personal Characteristics
Proficiency in small animal survival surgery

IACUC certified in Laboratory Animal Care and Use; compliance with all IACUC guidelines

OSHA certified in General Laboratory, Radiation Safety, and Infectious Waste and Sharps

Skilled in computer operations

Adept at reference and electronic literature searches

Readily learns and adapts to new techniques

Works effectively and efficiently independently or as a team

Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

Ability to work with minimal supervision
