Edits books, journals, or other written materials for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, organization, clarity, consistency, and accuracy to create online and/or print versions of publications. Determines level of editing required. Establishes and oversees editing schedules. Oversees the coordination of manuscript elements supplied by other departments. Collaborates with authors to resolve problems and to clarify meaning. Assists with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts. Checks typeset proofs before author review. Reviews typeset proofs or revised written copy returned by authors and approves or rejects changes. Enters author changes as appropriate and checks typeset pages. Has final responsibility for all manuscript components. Book editors oversee all stages of manuscript editing and proof review up to the time the book is bound and edit and approve catalog and jacket materials. May hire and oversee the work of freelance professionals or independent contractors. May oversee the work of editorial assistants and student assistants.
About the Unit
The University of Chicago News Office is responsible for news coverage and media publicity for UChicago research, events, announcements, and many aspects of University life. The News Office tells the story of the University through internally produced news and feature packages, in addition to stories, interviews and multimedia assets that the News Office coordinates for external media outlets.
Unit Job Summary
Editorial Assistant: Reports to the Senior Web Editor and Web Editor. Maintains the UChicago News site and looks for opportunities to enhance content, including frequent updates to external news clips. Helps update the News site, subject and audience pages to reflect the most recent news, edits and inputs photo slide shows to draw on more of our growing photo content, and constantly identifies and promotes new multimedia content. Helps ensure that our large volume of tagging is consistent and correctly feeding other sites.
Updates the Experts Guide as news officers routinely collects revised information or new faculty experts, as well as, updates the Accolades page. Assists with photo requests, story editing, and upkeep of events featured on the University's online calendar system.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a similar field required.
A minimum of one year of professional experience editing required.
Excellent command of written English required.
Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style required.
Knowledge of standard editing and proofreading marks required.
Ability to comprehend academic writing required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team required.
Excellent editorial, proofreading, and writing skills required; strong attention to detail required.
Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style required.
Ability to manage multiple projects and maintain high quality under deadlines required.
Demonstrated capacity to multi-task in fast-paced work environment, maintain schedules, and meet deadlines required.
High degree of comfort learning new software and technologies appropriate to business needs of the department and projects, required.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment required.
Familiarity with the University of Chicago preferred.
Familiarity with web content management systems, Drupal preferred.
