We are currently looking for a talented Editorial Board Manager to join our Publishing Services team within our rapidly growing San Francisco office.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must. The Editorial Board Manager will be responsible for a number of functions that focus on services to the Academic Editors who volunteer their time to make the journals run.

The Editorial Board Manager is also responsible for overseeing and providing direction for the Editorial Board’s online learning management system. This position will initially concentrate on support to PLOS ONE, but will expand to supporting the entire journal program. This role will oversee staff that provides support services to PLOS with respect to the oversight and management of the volunteer Academic Editors, working to help them be more effective and productive.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the management of the PLOS boards of Academic Editors
  • Actively manage the Board, monitoring AE terms, overseeing assessment process with Editors; handle re-invitation or roll-off of AEs as their terms end
  • Monitor AE performance and intervene where necessary; prepare reports that assess AE performance and work with Editors to make decisions on Board make up
  • Develop and implement comprehensive welcome materials to effectively onboard new Academic Editors
  • Create and deliver training programs designed to facilitate Academic Editors’ understanding of the peer review process as well as the manuscript submission and tracking/ peer review system
  • Administrate Academic Editor incentive and recognition program
  • Develop web-based training materials for AEs on relevant topics including (for example) ethical standards, acceptance criteria, and assigning reviewers
  • Administrate PLOS ONE Editorial Board Knowledge Base (plos.mrooms.net); over time, build out this function to include all PLOS journals
  • Oversee recruitment of new Academic Editors
  • Oversee development of Section Editor program for PLOS ONE
  • Actively facilitate discussion forums hosted on the Knowledge Base
  • Develop new support services specifically designed for Academic and/or Section Editors
  • Responsive to the needs of individual Academic Editors, and involvement in responding to their communications
  • Travel to meetings and conferences as needed to support the Board
  • Work with Marketing and journal teams to organize in-person events and meetings for Academic Editors
Qualifications and Experience:
  • 5+ years’ publishing experience, management of peer review process a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experienced people manager
  • Experience developing documentation and training programs
  • Experience working and communicating with academic researchers
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities; excellent organizational skills
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and high growth environment
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and plan for future growth
  • Passion for open access and desire to promote the PLOS model
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a scientific field; advanced degree a plus
