The nation's largest child advocacy association, National PTA, currently has an opening for an Editorial Specialist located in Alexandria, Virginia. The Editorial Specialist supports National PTA executives and leadership volunteers in communicating with various audiences, including members, leaders, policymakers, partners, sponsors and other stakeholders. The position is responsible for writing and editing highly visible letters, speeches, presentations, scripts and articles that convey key organizational messages, such as vision, mission and values, as well as our expertise. This position also supports writing and editing tasks associated with National PTA publications and events.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Editorial Specialist will include but not limited to:
  • Writing and editing letters, speeches, presentations, scripts and articles for National PTA executives and leadership volunteers
  • Writing, editing and proofreading National PTA publications, including periodicals, fact sheets, newsletters, reports, guides, fliers and brochures
  • Researching historical context, statistics, quotes, anecdotes and other information to support executive communications
  • Developing event-related runs of show
  • Performing other duties, as assigned
  • Liaise with subject-matter experts to ensure the accuracy of content and with graphic designers to improve the presentation of information
  • Following organizational processes for preparation and approval of materials
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, public policy or related field is required
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience as a writer, editor or proofreader
  • Previous experience managing executive communications, speechwriting and scripting
  • Previous experience working with executives and leadership volunteers
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Excellent interviewing and dictation skills
  • Proficient in Chicago and/or AP writing styles
  • Demonstrated tact and success in working with executives and leadership volunteers
  • Proven record of developing relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions
  • Able to juggle multiple demands, manage shifting priorities and meet deadlines
  • Familiar with education, health, parenting and/or advocacy-related terminology and concepts
  • Advanced skills in MS Office
