Position Summary

Performs inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of instrument and controls equipment and wiring; troubleshooting and writing minimal programming changes for PLC's. Continuously improves the production lines, specifically fine tuning electrical/electronic equipment to increase output, reduce downtime and reduce waste. Maintains, repairs, and calibrates electronic equipment. Performs tasks associated with test and repair of equipment including taking apart and reassembling components after repairing or replacing parts. Inspects equipment and evaluates performance.

Essential Functions

Troubleshoot and understand PLC logic from Allen Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Square D, PLCs.

Understand ladder logic from different programs that control PLCs.

Ability to read, edit and write ladder logic programs; experience with ladder logic software.

Understand analog and digital devices in input/output for various devices.

Understand drilling machinery as in the oil field today:
Active Heave drawworks controls

BOP Mux control systems

Cyberbased drill controls

Power generation control systems

Dynamic positioning control systems

Troubleshoots AC drives and variable frequency drives.

Troubleshoots down to the component level.

Maintains a high standard of safety and housekeeping to ensure area, machines and equipment are maintained in a safe and clean condition. Corrects and/or reports unsafe conditions and other faults.

9. Responsible for the installation, testing, repair, calibration, inspection and maintenance of instrumentation systems on the rig associated with oilfield process equipment.

Safety Accountabilities

Advanced professional with operating, engineering or specialist skills and demonstrated competence. Alternatively, a general department supervisor responsible for the direction of all day to day operating activities (including backshifts). Responsible for a major departments’ safety performance.

Ensures that personal behaviors/work practices are a role model for others and in line with Fleet safety standards such as Standard Work Instructions and Safe Operating Procedures.

Safety responsibilities include the co-ordination and planning of major operating and maintenance activities.

Typically, a supervisor with direct responsibility for all safety requirements for the entire 24 hour period (whether or not they are present in the Department i.e. backshifts)

Leads small teams on specific safety improvement initiatives and projects.

Demonstrates understanding of safety audit protocols.

Identifies improvement to safety standards for a work area by introducing upfront prevention strategies and puts measures in place to minimise risks and improve the overall work environment.

Participates in investigations regarding incidents in the immediate work area

Coaches others on safety issues and can conducts or co-ordinates safety tool box meetings etc.

Participates in reviews of results from operating tests or changes in work procedures to carefully ensure there are no impacts to work area.

Leads and pays close attention to “housekeeping,” double- checks and takes additional safety precautions to ensure no-one is put at risk by own work or the work of others.

Takes no short cuts and encourages other team members to take due care and not put others at risk.

Participates in safety initiatives/committees where appropriate.

Advises other Departments and evaluates others’ working around their areas of responsibility to ensure that safety procedures are well understood and followed.

Anticipates risks or failure.

Communicates information and feedback from accident/incident data and re-hab processes and takes action to improve safety conditions. Encourages others to do the same.

Participates and guides investigations of injuries/incidents in their own and other departments.

Minimum Education and Skill Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum 7 years of related experience with Technical skills such as: PLC's, computers, electronics, calibration, hydraulics, pneumatics and comprehensive knowledge of oil and gas process equipment.

Must have the ability to interpret electronic schematic drawings (to component level) of pneumatic loops, hardware relay logic diagrams, PLC control programs, motor control circuit diagrams, etc. and troubleshoot faults remotely - without being at equipment.

Ability to extract, read and understand data loggers.

Ability to communicate to other technical people in verbally and in writing.

Must have good mathematical skills to include basic algebra for calculation of electrical/electronic equations.

The a bility to analyze problems, identify solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.

Physical Requirements

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling are required frequently. Requires lifting and substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

The worker is subject to environmental conditions. The worker is subject to extreme heat which may include temperatures above 100° for periods of more than one hour.

The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operates machines, and where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature.
