Title: ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL –- Twelve-month positionSalary: As determined by School CommitteeFunction: The Elementary Principal, working directly under the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, shall have the administrative responsibility for evolving, organizing, and maintaining relevant administrative and educational instructional services to promote the development of each student attending the school.Duties and Responsibilities: The principal has numerous responsibilities and duties that generally consist of: 1.Interpreting and enforcing all School Committee policies and regulations, and administering all pertinent personnel policies.2.Coordination of transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services.3.Supervising the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes.4.Providing for adequate inventories of property under his/her jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property.5.Preparing the school budget and supervising school finances.6.Searching out external funding for programs and activities.7.Supervising the preparation and maintenance of all required records and reports.8.Planning federal assistance programs and assisting in the implementation of all funded programs.9.Responsible for final approval of the master teaching schedule and for special assignments.10.Develop and maintain a school safety manual, and supervise all safety and emergency preparedness programs, including fire drills.11.Conducting meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.12.Administering the operations of the school, school discipline and the supervision of all activities of an extracurricular nature, including athletic, social, and educational events.13.Serving as assessment coordinator for the building and be responsible for the assessment program and the interpretation of data.14.Coordinating and supervising all committees required by R.I.D.E. and the district (i.e., SIT, TST, ET, IEP and 504, etc.)15.Participating in administrative staff meetings with R.I.D.E. officials, central office and building level administrators.16.Responding to written and oral requests for information in an accurate and timely fashion.17.Preparing and submitting monthly reports to the Superintendent or his/her designee on a timely basis.18.Keeping the Superintendent, or his/her designee, informed of events and/or activities.19.Reporting to the Superintendent or his/her designee, the principal’s absence for illness or planned absences.20.Performing other general responsibilities as may be assigned.21.Serve as the educational, instructional leader of the school and holding high expectation for staff and students.22.Lead the school’s efforts in strategic planning, school improvements, program development, and professional development.23.Functioning as a leader in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program.24.Assisting in recruiting, screening, selecting, and recommending the employment of all school personnel.25.Supervising all school personnel in assignment, evaluation, and in-service training, and recommendations regarding these responsibilities.26.Keeping abreast of trends, developments, research, and applicable laws and regulations as they pertain to education and school operation.27.Develop and implement a plan for effective articulation between and among all constituency groups as it pertains to programs, professional activities and extra-curricular efforts of the school.28.Organizing and directing an effective public relations program, including official school correspondence and news releases.29.Interpreting curriculum to the School Committee, staff, public and other groups.30.Acts as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life.31.At the discretion of the School Committee, the principal shall attend and participate in local, state, and national professional meetings, conventions, and conferences.Educational Preparation: 1.A Master’s Degree with additional preparation in public school administration and/or supervision will be required in addition to a background of experience that is broad and varied.2.The applicant must hold or be able to qualify for the Elementary School Principal’s Certificate issued by the Rhode Island Department of Education.Experience: 1.Successful experience as a teacher, supervisor, assistant principal, and/or school principal.2.Preferably, applicants should have experience at the elementary school level.3.Such alternatives to the above experiential requirements as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.Personal Qualifications: 1.Good health – willing to submit to a medical examination.2.Vigorous leadership qualities essential.3.Ability to get along well with one’s colleagues and the public.4.Ability to relate with students and establish a good rapport.5.Must be a person of professional and personal integrity.
