Position Description

Conducts laboratory procedures such as embryo and blastocyst culturing, assisted hatching (opening the layer of cells surrounding a fertilized egg to improve the odds of implantation), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (injecting a single sperm into an egg), and the cryopreservation of embryos.

  • Assumes primary responsibility and possible direct responsibility for cleaning and setup of Operating room prior to ART cases.
  • Participates in oocyte retrievals including identification of oocytes.
  • Prepares and maintains laboratory for ART procedures.
  • Prepares semen samples for ART procedures.
  • Cultures oocytes and embryos.
  • Inseminates oocytes using conventional or ICSI methods.
  • Detects fertilization.
  • Prepares and cleans transfer facilities.
  • Prepares embryos for transfer.
  • Cryopreservation of gametes and embryos.
  • Maintains QC/QA/QM program.
  • Collaborates with OBGYN Laboratory Director in developing new procedures/protocols/policies within the laboratory to maintain laboratory accreditation and federal standards, including data collection and preperation for federal inspections.
  • Performs andrology work not directly related to ART procedures.
  • Conducts hormone analysis and other laboratory based testing, communicates results to physicians and to patients when directed to so.

  • May transport clinical samples.
  • May assist with teaching laboratory techniques to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students; and residents in support of research.
  • May assist with running laboratory samples for research of faculty and residents.
  • May assist in data collection requested by physicians.
  • May perform independent research with approval of Department Chairman.

    Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in a life science, with post graduate education preferred. Six years of experience of which two are in human embryo culture which include but are not limited to: media preparation, oocytes identification, oocytes insemination, ICSI , fertilization detection, oocytes and embryo culture, preparation for transfer, embryo Cryopreservation, semen preparation, semen analysis. General laboratory QC and QM experience. Additional education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

    • Reasoning ability, problem solving skills and self-starter, ability to apply common senses understanding to carry simple one or two step instructions; ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skill; ability to write clear, concise reports, and business correspondence; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
    • The applicant may be asked to travel and work at other Texas Tech regional centers. You must also be willing to take weekend calls for both ART and Hormone Lab.
