This position is for a Designer in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. This is a mid-level engineer position and responsibilities shall include designing road, bridge, drainage, construction and other projects as assigned. This position requires the applicant be proficient using AutoCAD Civil 3D or Microstation and InRoads Design Software.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work requires independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment and ingenuity in making minor adaptations and modifications.
• Assignments include drafting, design and development of construction drawings, testing of materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigations, report preparation and other activities of limited scope requiring knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques commonly employed in the specific narrow area of assignments.
• Coordinates and participates with Public Works Divisions, such as Operations in order to develop project construction and design schedules.
• Prepares preliminary and detailed cost estimates and determines project design and construction feasibility.
• May direct the work of drafters, inspectors, and other technicians assigned to assist in the work.
• May work with, train, coordinate or perform the activities of lesser skilled personnel.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required. Must have or the ability to obtain their EI within one year after being hired. Two (2) or more years of experience working as a civil engineer with an emphasis in roadway, drainage and/or bridge design or construction.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Required to have valid Colorado Driver's License.

Other Necessary Requirements:

Must have demonstrated skill in all of the following areas:
• Use and application of County Code, ordinances, policies, CDOT Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, AASHTO, MUTCD, FEMA guidance, and any other applicable reference manuals as a source for requirements for assignments and customer service issues.
• Knowledge in hydrology and hydraulic analysis for drainage and bridge design using hydraulic software such as HY-8, Culvert Master, Flow Master and a working knowledge using and reading HEC-RAS inputs and outputs.
• Design of, County roadways, pavements, drainage, small bridges and public works projects of average complexity or conventional engineering skills.
• Responsible for specific tasks, reports, inspection related to development and construction of a project.
• Computer skills in CADD drafting, spreadsheets, Adobe Professional and word processing.
• Knowledge of collection and analysis of survey information for the purpose of civil engineering design.
• All work is reviewed by a supervisor or professional engineer.
• Assists in the maintenance of the pavement and bridge management/inventory systems.
• Recommends infrastructure improvement and assists in planning efforts.
• May direct the work of drafters, inspectors, and other technicians assigned to assist in the work.
• Perform engineering review and final acceptance of land use/development cases as they relate to public works facilities.
• Work and communicate (oral and written) at a highly effective level with the staff, Commissioners, County and outside agencies, construction contractors, consultants, private companies, and the public.
