This position functions as the Machine Shop Engineer and manages/coordinates incoming machining requests. It requires a functioning machinist in operating various machinery in the lab and supports research and instructional activities of faculty, staff and students through design/fabrication services.
1. Hands on machinery operation in a production environment:
a. Ability to operate, understand and maintain all current and planned machining equipment, both metrology and prototyping equipment and tools in the lab inclusive of lathes, mills, saws, and welding for either Computer Numerical Control ( CNC ) or manual devices.
b. Utilize Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing ( CAD / CAM ) tools.
c. Train/certify individuals to use machining, metrology, and prototyping equipment.
d. Provide design and materials selection guidance to requests for support from the Machine Shop.
e. Interaction on an individual/team basis to deliver high quality machined parts, and designs based on sketches, detailed drawings, photos, or other concepts.
2. Supervisory responsibilities:
a. Maintain all software on both workstations and CNC hardware, with current versions and safety updates.
b. Develop and implement scheduling/costing scheme to optimize design and machining activities in the machine shop.
c. Facilitate a safe working environment consistent with UCF Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies.
d. Prepare reports, quotes, supervise staff and record keeping.
e. Procure materials, tooling and equipment.
f. Oversee receipt and distribution of all MAE Procured items.
A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. If minimum requirements of the position do not require post high school education, an applicant is not required to provide the information on the application.
- Experience and knowledge in lathes, milling machines, saws, welders, metrology devices, CAD / CAM tools, and other general machine shop related equipment/tools.
- Ability to interpret/develop blue prints, engineering graphics, and technical drawings, including dimensioning tolerances and surface finishes.
- Experience in converting designs formatted in current CAD / CAM software to CNC machines.
