This position is required to install traffic counters on the roadside and sensors in the travel lanes on lightly to heavily travelled highways. Work at night is required on higher volume highways. Competency level: contributing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Ability to use traffic data collection devices; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to use and operate computers and associated software; ability to operate a motor vehicle and equipped safety devices; ability to use a hammer to drive large nails into the asphalt; ability to lift, carry, and install traffic devices and batteries weighing up to 80 lbs.; ability to work in the roadway in a safe manner; ability to work independently and complete tasks as scheduled; ability to work day or night; ability to read a map; ability to visually distinguish vehicle classification types based on the FHWA Scheme.
Necessary special qualifications: possession of a valid North Carolina Drivers License.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency with coursework in mathematics and one year of experience relating to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Certain positions in the department of transportation that serve as engineering aides require a high school diploma and no experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
