To perform and direct construction material testing, excavation observations and project monitoring requiring engineering, geotechnical and/or environmental disciplines.


1. Proposal /Contract Preparation

· Communicate with clients to determine their project needs

· Assist in developing engineering and testing programs for projects

· Assist in establishing project budgets

· Assist in preparing and present proposals

2. Performance of Word/Report Preparation

· Establish and meet project quality requirements

· Assist in maintaining and improving the materials testing laboratory in the local office

· Oversee and maintain client, project team and in-house communication during work performance

· Maintain current working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, procedures and technologies in designated fields

· Assist in preparing formal engineering reports

· Render advice to clients

3. Field and Laboratory Work

· Conduct geotechnical field testing according to QA procedures

· Perform special inspection services materials testing or environmental services on an as needed basis

· Coordinate technicians to perform field tests

· Perform field tests

· Perform field testing of soils

· Perform soil boring layout/documentation, utility clearance meets and surveying

· Assist in training of less experienced personnel in routine field work/documentation

· Conduct soil laboratory tests according to QA procedures

· Log/classify soil samples in laboratory or fieldwork, as needed

4. Project Management

· Maintain project file and job status

· Prepare invoice

· Pursue aged accounts

· Assist with developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures for our Quality Assurance Program (QAP) in your areas of expertise

· Assist with report preparation and review

5. Marketing

· Establish, maintain and build business relationships with clients

· Pursue specific project leads

· Aid in company marketing functions

6. Professional

· Represent company within technical/professional organizations

7. Miscellaneous

· Perform other job duties not listed, as required, to meet department and company needs


· Ability to occasionally lift 50-100 pounds

· Ability to perform hand auger borings and field testing throughout the working day

· Some duties outdoors and may be away from main office/laboratory location

· Personal vehicle available for company business

· Occasional travel possible

· A clear driving record while employed


· Directly or indirectly supervise engineering and technical personnel within the area of assignment

· Provides mentoring to lower level technicians


· Assist in deciding work scope of projects

· Assist in deciding content of proposals

· Assist in deciding content of reports

· Assist in providing review of engineering reports


· To maintain the quality of service and work product

· To market the services in a manner that is profitable to the company

· To coordinate with other departments by clearly outlining needs of client with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity and communication

· To conduct all activities in a safe, efficient manner


· High school diploma or equivalent

· Two year technical degree in a related field is desirable

· 8 years - experience with laboratory and field testing of soils and concrete ( asphalt is a bonus) engineering observations of grading, roadways, buildings

· Or Bachelors degree in a related field and 2 years experience in specialty area

· Or Bachelors degree in a non-related field and 4 years experience in specialty area

· Detailed knowledge of principles and practices in more than one specialty area

· Or demonstrated expert knowledge of principles within a specialty area

· Demonstrated proficiency in developing timely, accurate, and detailed project documentation

· Demonstrated proficiency in report writing, experience reviewing test results, project management

· Proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel and Word

· Demonstrated track record of building and maintaining high levels of client satisfaction, which generates repeat business

· Skill in verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex technical information to technical audiences

· Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people

· ACI concrete Field I certification, ICC masonry preferred, ND DOT certifications preferred, reinforced concrete preferred

· Troxler approved certificate for use of Troxler gauge preferred

· Other state DOT certifications a plus
