The Sr. Laboratory Safety Officer will lead the staff of Laboratory Safety Officers responsible for the administration of health and safety programs for the campus to include: the School of Medicine, several Life Sciences Departments, School of Engineering and several physical science departments. As the Sr. Lab Safety Officer, assist Laboratory Safety Officers with the implementation of the comprehensive safety and chemical waste management programs for these departments and monitor for quality assurance. Oversee Laboratory Safety Officer's safety inspections of laboratories, shops, storerooms and other common use rooms. Monitor and guide Lab Safety Officers with the development and implementation of laboratory health education programs i.e. SOP Template Library, Lessons Learned Library, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA), chemical waste management programs, chemical emergency response policies and procedures, dissemination of information and technical guidelines on waste management procedures, and campus policies and procedures for laboratory health and safety. Monitor and assist Laboratory Safety Officers in the coordination campus compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program, Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, particularly hazardous substances policies, Laser Safety Standards and other State and Federal Standards. Serve as a member of the UCLA Hazardous Materials Response Team (HazMat).

Required/Preferred
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, administrators, managers, subordinates and academia.
Required
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field such as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biology, industrial hygiene, safety, engineering, or related field is required and two years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required
An advanced degree or Master's degree in biological, chemical or physical sciences is highly preferred.
Preferred
Ability to coordinate and discuss all aspects of quality assurance of Lab Safety Inspection Program with Lab Safety Officers; submit written reports to the CHO and Director of EH&S.

Monitor job performance of subordinates and report to Supervisor; visit inspecton sites to discuss status and report any problems or hazardous conditions with Supervisor.

Determine progress/productivity of inspections and follow-ups, accuracy and quality of inspection reports; review the accuracy of metrics and quality of reports.

Ability to provide on-the-job training for new employees and report progress to Supervisor.

Ability to analyze complex environmental/health technical data using logic and quantitative reasoning and develop solutions and/or alternatives for problems and issues.

Working knowledge of biological laboratory research along with principles of bio-safety and the ability to apply this understanding to the tasks of laboratory nspections and hazard recognition.

Working knowledge of personal protective equipment requirements in a laboratory environment.
