Performs skilled work in driving and operating a waste collection vehicle with mechanical arm used to pick up and empty waste containers.
Drives a waste collection vehicle over a designated route, picking up solid waste containers as assigned, depositing the waste into a collection vehicle, and returning containers to the prescribed area.
Operates the mechanical arm to hoist and maneuver the container.
Work requires a high degree of attention in the operation of equipment to prevent accidents in maneuvering the containers in dangerous areas and preventing injury to others as well as protecting the equipment from damage.
Performs waste screening at the pick up point and reports uncollectable or hazardous materials to the superintendent.
Must be knowledgeable of the City Ordinance pertaining to Municipal Solid Waste collection and disposal services and assist in enforcement by "tagging" customers for non-conformance to standard according to the Department's policies and procedures.
Responds to customer complaints; resolves complaints within scope of authority; explains actions to supervisor.
Operates vehicle and equipment at the Transfer Station according to the Site Operations Plan.
Safely unloads waste at designated areas, and prepares vehicle for further use.
Operates the waste collection vehicle in high risk traffic conditions; remains alert to surrounding environment and potential safety hazards; collects waste in a safe manner, assuring the safety of the general public.
Performs operator level or preventive maintenance on assigned vehicle and equipment.
Cleans the cab daily.
Greases mechanical arm daily.
Washes the collection vehicle on a daily basis; prepares both a Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspection report according to the Division's policies and guidelines.
Trains and instructs others in the use of the vehicle and mechanical lifting device.
Reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately. Completes reports as required.
Complies with safety rules, policies, and procedures.
Uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls.
Maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.
Makes special collections as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
One year experience in driving and operating a solid waste collection vehicle; or
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Texas Class B CDL by date of hire.
