GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: The purpose of the class is to operate complex heavy equipment necessary in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of city facilities. The class is responsible for crew leadership, routine maintenance procedures, safe and effective loading and operation, and storage. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.ESSENTIAL TASKS: Operates specialized equipment, machinery or vehicles, such as heavy construction vehicles, trucks with hydraulic pumping equipment, pressure sprayers, paving equipment, jackhammers, backhoes, or cranes.Operates light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes, and brooms.Removes debris, litter, earth, or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines; sets poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides and hillsides.Repairs existing systems and structures, such as water, sewer, or gas mains, fire hydrants, roadways, or buildings; clears obstructions from pipelines; repairs or cleans structures and surfaces, including removing graffiti.Inspects equipment to ensure safe operations.Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and tools.Assembles and loads equipment, tools, materials and supplies according to daily work assignments.Follows established safety rules and regulations for the safe operation of equipment and machinery; reports accidents, equipment breakage and unsafe conditions to a supervisor.Determines amount and type of materials, equipment and/ or tools necessary to complete tasks; assigns work; supervises and instructs others.Completes routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports and logs.INVOLVEMENT WITH DATA, PEOPLE AND THINGS DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires speaking or signaling to people to convey or exchanging information of a general nature.INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires leading, operating, and/ or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience such as heavy construction equipment, trucks using hydraulic pumping equipment, dump trucks, front end loaders, street sweepers, backhoes, asphalt rollers, asphalt pavers, hydraulic lift trucks, bushhogs, leaf trucks, jackhammers, gangmowers, tractors, or electronic signaling equipment; may involve installation and/ or testing.COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing skilled work involving rules/ systems with almost constant problem solving.MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.
