Executive Director, Western Region

Position Overview
We are seeking an Executive Director to maximize Education Pioneers' impact in Los Angeles and the Bay Area and to identify expansion cities in the Western part of the US. This role is one of four Executive Directors responsible for our impact in 18 cities across the country. The Executive Director leads a team of 6-8 staff in achieving regional goals that contribute to Education Pioneers' organization wide strategic priorities and long term impact. The Executive Director is a member of the National Leadership Team at Education Pioneers and reports directly to the President.

Primary Responsibilities

Develop and manage implementation of a regional growth strategy to maximize and sustain Education Pioneers' impact in the region
  • Create and achieve compelling regional goals for Education Pioneers program, sector impact, employee growth and satisfaction, and revenue (see more detail on revenue generation in the following section) which align to national goals
  • In partnership with the Senior Director, translate goals and strategies into effective action plans which are implemented with fidelity and flexibility
  • Cultivate effective Local Advisory Boards that can advance the regions' strategic priorities and contribute to meeting regional goals
  • Deploy a data driven approach to continually assess regional results and adapt strategy and plan accordingly
Generate revenue to fund the region
  • Develop a diversified and sustainable strategy to generate contributed and earned revenue which fully fund regional operations
  • Hit annual earned and contributed revenue targets
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit major donors to make contributions to Education Pioneers
  • Manage and move the region's donor portfolio of current donors and donor prospects
Cultivate and manage impactful Partner relationships
  • Implement a regional Key Partner strategy focused on our new value proposition
  • Develop regional team skill and success in cultivating Partners for program and full-time placements
  • Identify and pilot new ways to serve Key Partners
Create a visible face and voice of Education Pioneers in the region
  • Identify and prioritize external exposure opportunities in the region and deploy self and others in the organization to maximize impact in the region
  • Serve as regional external face and build the brand of Education Pioneers to fuel regional fundraising, expansion, and marketing efforts
  • Identify opportunities for the Local Advisory Board to amplify Education Pioneers' mission and impact
  • Cultivate and leverage relationships with key leaders in the region to advance Education Pioneers' mission and impact
Build and manage an exceptional team
  • Model excellent leadership and management practices
  • Build a highly effective work culture that embodies Education Pioneers' core values of Courage, Optimism, Collaboration, and Action
  • Partner with the Senior Director to:
o Ensure the regional team is structured to meet its ambitious goals, establish clear performance objectives, and create a culture of accountability to ensure a highly productive and successful team

o Ensure staff members are achieving excellence, leveraging their individual strengths, collaborating effectively to achieve goals

o Ensure staff members are active participants in their professional growth through well crafted and executed professional development plans

o Cultivate internal and external talent required to fuel the long term success of the region

Contribute to organization-wide innovation and growth as a member of the National Leadership Team
  • Engage in annual organization wide goal setting process and set goals that align with organization wide goals and are at the right intersection of ambitious and feasible
  • Identify and "make a case for" new regional initiatives which advance our long term impact
  • Actively participate and/or lead cross-organization initiatives aligned with our organization wide goals
  • Share best practices developed/honed in the region with the wider organization
Experience and Qualifications
  • Prior success in reporting to a CEO/President or Board of Directors
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience which must include: (1) generating revenue through fundraising or sales, (2) strategy development or business development, and (3) management and development of mid-career staff
  • Proven ability to close six figure deals in fundraising or sales
  • Exceptional skill in building and maintaining strong relationships with diverse constituents to achieve broad, mutually beneficial goals
  • General knowledge of the regional education landscape in the region, including key leaders, priorities, market opportunities, and organizations
  • Ability to articulate the importance of high quality public education for all children and the belief that all children can achieve academic success
  • Ability to travel regularly within the region and nationally (anticipate 40-50% travel in Year 1)
