Job Description / Statement of Duties:
Massachusetts College of Art and Design seeks an experienced executive to lead its Office of External Relations and Communications. Reporting to President, the Executive Director is the senior administrator who provides leadership to external relations positioning and staff of communications and marketing. S/he is responsible for providing overall direction and management of the college's marketing research and strategic communications, to advance mission and institutional reputation, and maintain the integrity of its institutional identity. S/he works closely with other college departments to direct marketing assessment and planning, thus helping to ensure MassArt receives appropriate recognition regionally, nationally, and internationally. These efforts include assisting in the development of a national and international strategy for recruitment and partnerships; targeted PR efforts to showcase faculty and student accomplishments; increasing MassArt student and faculty participation in national and international venues for art, design, and scholarship; and taking a national leadership role on arts education policy issues nationally and in the Commonwealth. The Executive Director will: * Establish institutional priorities related to all aspects of communications, marketing, and public affairs. * Identify opportunities to raise MassArt's visibility and to enhance MassArt's reputation. * Support MassArt's institutional identity and reputation through the development and implementation of a strategic roadmap that successfully supports and delivers MassArt's message and brand to various constituency groups. * Create institutional strategy plan and message campaigns for internal and external audiences. Serve as spokesperson to external audiences. * Develop and manage key allegiance relationships for cultivation, coordination and support for strategic external relationships in both public and private sector, in conjunction with other units of the College (e.g. Center for Art and Community Partnerships/Galleries/Academic Programs, Institutional Advancement, Government and Community Relations, and Events) * Build strong internal partnerships throughout all college functional units to help them effectively manage their communication activities, to assist them in targeting, acquiring and retaining high value constituents, and to ensure integrity and consistency in MassArt's message and brand throughout the institution. * Spearhead, implement, and manage short and long-term marketing plans within budget and ROI targets. * Provide communications counsel to the President and draft key messages including speeches, letters to internal and external constituents, annual reports, internal and published materials to guide and inform preparation for significant events. * Serve as advisor to President on all issues related to MassArt's image, identity, message, visibility, media relations, high-profile events, and key external constituents. * Participate in institutional strategic planning and goal setting. * Partner with Technology and other campus units to further MassArt's Internet visibility, presence, and interactivity, including its website and other networking sites. * Implement and align emergent media technologies to optimize college communication, identity and visibility. * Set benchmarks for deliverables and outcomes. * Oversee budget and resource allocation for the office, including the management of staff and external contractors, design and communication commissions. *Ensure that affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions for which they are responsible and which fall within the scope of the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity Plan. Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree. Five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications and external relations. At least 2 years of prior experience managing professional staff is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred. * Experience managing visual identity and institutional identity system. * Experience managing communications for multi-dimensional institution * Experience in marketing and communications in the academic, cultural, or non-profit sector. * The ideal candidate will have superior communication skills, the ability to apply market research to the decision-making process, a clear understanding of how technology may be used to achieve marketing objectives, proven skills as a manager, strategist, as well as honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic.
