We have an immediate opening for an experienced publishing professional to serve as Executive Editor for the seven PLOS peer-reviewed open-access journals.

The Executive Editor will have overall responsibility for the editorial direction and vision of the PLOS journal editorial program and work as a member of the PLOS leadership team, helping to set broader organizational strategy and goals, and delivering on the PLOS mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.

The Executive Editor Reports to the Chief Publications and Products Officer, and has overall management responsibility for an experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative Editorial Directors for PLOS ONE, the Medical titles, the Biology titles, and their teams. The Executive Editor will ensure that the PLOS publishing portfolio is coordinated, high-quality, and furthers the goals of PLOS.

Responsibilities: Organizational management
  • Work with PLOS leadership team to establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization
  • Establish and execute editorial vision and practices
  • Lead Editorial Team
  • Lead journal editorial programs and policies
    • Work with Editorial Directors to set programmatic and journal-specific policies
    • Liaison with other departments to ensure continued success of the journal publishing program
    • Represent editorial interests with the Board and Executive Team
  • Oversee publishing program activities
    • Monitor journal publishing statistics
    • Production of monthly publishing report
    • Troubleshoot editorial issues with teams as they arise
    • Coordinate between projects (e.g. marketing activity, editorial policies)
  • Input into and management of editorial budgets
    • Resource allocation
    • Setting targets for submissions/publications
    • Managing in-sourced and out-sourced editorial efforts
  • New publishing projects
    • Work with Executive Editors and the PLOS staff to identify new opportunities for content development and publishing activity
    • Develop strategic direction for and prioritize new projects
  • Open Access Publishing awareness
    • Keep abreast of market/competitor trends and publishing-related OA initiatives
Internal Relationships
  • Overall management of editorial teams
    • Direct line management of Editorial Directors for PLOS ONE, the Medical titles and the Biology titles
    • Ensuring effective management practices/structure within editorial group
  • Communication with staff
    • Chair of weekly publications meeting
    • Regular presentation of publishing activity to staff
    • Coordination and collaboration with Executive Team and Department heads
  • Communication with Board members
    • Attend and present at Board meetings
    • Coordinate Board Editorial Advisory Committee
External relationships
  • Fielding inquiries about new publishing ventures/potential collaborations
  • Representing PLOS at meetings/conferences, as appropriate
Qualifications and Experience:
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible editorial experience in STM journal publishing
  • A strong advocate for the PLOS Mission, Open Access, Core Objectives and Core Principles
  • Advanced degree or equivalent research experience in a relevant biomedical field preferred
  • A visionary with demonstrated ability to think strategically, implement creative solutions, and grow a journals publishing program
  • Experienced people manager with a track record of building and developing high performing teams
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
