RESPONSIBILITIES:

Authors are part-time, non-resident senior researcher/faculty that may be designated as Senior Fellows for the institution and who have significant operational experience within the SOF, academic, or interagency community. Provide recognized special operations experts, recognized civilian experts in national security affairs, or recognized academic experts on subjects of SOF Ground, Sea, Land, and Interagency with industry standard publication experience. The contractors are experts with experience in research and professional publications. There are multiple levels of contractors dependant upon their level of experience level and publication history. They conduct research on national security issues critical to the SOF community and publish associated monographs. The JSOU Annual Research Plan combined with study proposals submitted throughout the year, form the nucleus of research topics. The contractor shall serve as adjunct professors as resources for developing monographs and as the editorial staff for JSOU publications. They prepare and submit research proposals on selected topics and, if approved by JSOU, research, and write a monograph on the topic. Upon the contractor’s submission of the manuscript, JSOU Press will conduct content and technical editing, fact checking, and copy editing. JSOU Press will track the publication through research and production, including submitting the manuscript to JSOU’s blind review process. JSOU Press will then work with the publication author or sponsor to resolve concerns raised by JSOU blind review, ensuring that the manuscript is rewritten, as necessary, to meet JSOU standards and desires. The contractor shall work to strengthen JSOU’s research and publication programs and opportunities on special operations relevant subjects to ensure that this knowledge is distributed and available for reference globally. Authors will establish or improve JSOU connectivity to Joint and Service PME research centers and publishing organizations to promote special operations topics and mutual research opportunities. The contractor shall work to establish or strengthen formalized SOF Research Programs between USSOCOM and Joint/Service PME institutions, selected civilian academic research institutions, and international research centers. The contractor shall coordinate the research plan with USSOCOM components, TSOCs, deployed elements, METs, and Joint and Service PME such as NDU, NPS, and the Service colleges. The contractor shall support SOF curriculum at Senior Professional Military Education institutions and at related educational events such as the Joint Land Air Sea Simulation (JLASS). The contractor shall periodically plan and execute strategically focused senior-level symposia of comparable quality to nationally recognized colleges and universities. Normal duties of contractor include: Research and write original, scholarly work that contributes to the SOF body of knowledge; Comply with the academic and publication standards of the university; Enhance formalized SOF Research Program between USSOCOM and Service/Joint PME institutions, appropriate civilian academic research institutions, and international research centers; Lecture periodically and/or perform work in a typical post-secondary classroom setting; Periods of extensive travel throughout the world to support the mission of JSOU Mobile Education Teams; Enhance knowledge of special operations within the SOF community, among our SOF operational enablers, and among our interagency partners. Increase SOF core and elective curriculum offerings emphasizing special operations missions and operational planning at Services’ PME Intermediate Level Colleges. Assist in rewriting special operations curriculum in core PME programs and augmenting Service/Joint PME faculty with a combination of resident, adjunct, or on demand subject matter expertise. Develop a SOF wargaming cell to support Service War Colleges and the National War College exercises; and create a strategic communication plan to better prepare SOF leaders selected to speak at PME institutions and academic symposia

REQUIREMENTS:
  • PhD and/or extensive national-level and theater-level command experience in joint special operations.
  • 25+ years of SOF or related experience
  • Significant operational experience within the SOF, academic, or interagency community
  • Expertise in national security affairs, or recognized academic experts on subjects of SOF Ground, Sea, Land, and Interagency, with industry standard publication experience
  • Extensive Research and professional publications experience
  • Published multiple articles in internationally recognized journals, authored books and/or published original, peer reviewed research
  • Knowledge of the principles of research design
