This position is located at the hospital, villages within the auspices of the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation. The purpose is to provide a variety of clerical, housekeeping, and clinical functions that aid the dental team in the performance of their assigned duties. This assistant benefits the designated population through adequate dental services.
Knowledge of reception, routing and scheduling of patients, ordering supplies and keeping clinic properly supplied.
Ability to sterilize dental instruments and keep clinic clean and presentable to patients.
Skill and dexterity in performing all intra-oral and extra-oral techniques.
Knowledge of dental terminology in order to accurately record dental treatment and examination information in patient file, and ability to file and retrieve patient records.
Knowledge of all instruments, routine and specialty and procedures required to prepare for and assist normal clinical procedures.
Knowledge of dental anatomy and radiographic techniques in order to correctly expose, process, and mount radiographs.
Skill necessary to perform reversible intra-oral techniques, specifically routine restoration of teeth with alloy and composite materials.
Ability to recognize common dental disorders such as dental caries and periodontal inflammation, and ability to perform procedures to treat these conditions when directed by the dentist.
Knowledge of steps and techniques required for placement of sealants on teeth.
Knowledge and skill in tooth isolation techniques required to maintain a dry field for placement of restorations and sealants.
Minimum one year of experience as a dental assistant required.
Restores teeth after preparation has been accomplished. This includes selection, contouring and placement of matrices, placement of bases and liners and packing, carving and polishing of simple and complex alloy restorations such as those in requiring retentive pins or cusp replacement. Also, places and finishes simple composite restorations and places and contours temporary restorations.
Provides dental chairside assisting, fully anticipating the dentist's need for various instruments, materials and services.
Assists patient in completing medical history, reviews medical history for significant findings. Records examination and treatment information in the patient record.
Takes preliminary impressions for study models, removes sutures, places surgical gauze following extraction. Places simple temporary restorations, polishes alloy restorations, applies desensitizing agents and places and removes rubber dam.
Performs routine dental laboratory procedures, including pouring and trimming models, constructing custom trays, fabricating base plates and bite rims.
Cements space maintainers and stainless steel crowns at the direction of the dentist.
Responsible for cleaning, sharpening, packaging and sterilizing all dental instruments for proper storage when not in use.
Correctly exposes, processes, and mounts intra and extra-oral radiographs.
Performs oral prophylaxis and applies topical fluoride treatment.
Operates ultrasonic scaler (cavitron) and uses hand instruments to remove visible calculus.
Places pit and fissure sealants as prescribed by the dentist.
Orders necessary supplies and keeps clinic properly stocked at all times.
Relays to the patient the post treatment instruction as well as motivating and instructing patients in proper home care and disease prevention techniques.
Presents information to community groups on oral health and dental disease prevention at the direction of the dentist.
Maintains dental clinic in a clean and orderly manner. Provides routine maintenance on all dental equipment.
Takes and records blood pressure.
