The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record (outpatient and emergency services if required). Concurrent coding for assignment of working DRG as required. Classification systems include ICD-9-CM and CPT and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management department and CHS approved policies and procedures.


This specialist must have a high school diploma and be an RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or possess equivalent training/experience in coding nomenclatures/systems.

Must possess in-depth knowledge of medical and anatomical terminology, reimbursement principles, health record content, sequencing of diagnoses, and the use of coding software. Two years coding experience in an acute care hospital environment. Proficient ICD-9-CM and CPT coding. A CHS pre-employment coding test must be taken with successful pass rate of 80%.

RHIT, RHIA and/or CCS certification or eligible from AHIMA preferred.
