The Lead Faculty/ Writing Center Director position is a full-time employment opportunity. Ashford University (AU) is seeking a highly motivated, self-starter to reform and reorganize its Online Writing Center (OWC). The OWC Lead Faculty/Director will be responsible for implementing the OWC mission of providing support and encouragement to AU students while facilitating their successes in written course work. The Lead Faculty/Director will work with various academic units to assure that composition and writing-intensive courses and instructors are of the highest caliber.
Essential Job Duties:
Additional Job Duties (include but are not limited to):
- Overseeing all OWC tutorial services and documentation
- Working closely with the English Department Chair to improve upon freshman composition
- Working closely with the English Department Chair and other academic units to design and to maintain co-curricular programs that involve qualified AU students in internships and tutorial positions
- Supervising the OWC staff, which includes a full-time manager, who is also a lead tutor and manages the day-to-day activities of the Center’s cadre of tutors
- Chairing the OWC Steering Committee, which is comprised of relevant AU academic and student-service units
- Working with IT and instructional design units to determine appropriate technology infrastructure
- Working with writers and web designers to develop the OWC website, which will include instructional documents, multimedia tutorials, and embedded communication applications
- Writing, revising, and vetting quality online writing resources and tutorials
- Teaching 2-3 courses annually in the area of freshman composition
- Publicizing OWC services to AU units through emails, letters, presentations, screencasts, and various outreach publications
- Collecting and analyzing data regarding OWC use and effectiveness, particularly with respect to AU course work
- Designing and implementing a Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program and supporting AU faculty with their writing endeavors
- Developing short- and long-range plans for the OWC
- Performing other duties as assigned.

- The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in English with emphasis in rhetoric and composition.
- He or she should have least two to three years of college or university teaching experience (including some online teaching) and two to three years of experience working in—or, for—a writing center (preferably one with a significant online component).
- The ideal candidate will also have considerable experience working with non-traditional students who are returning to school to complete their education after a long absence.
- He or she should work easily with electronically mediated systems, including learning management systems, content management systems, websites, web-conferencing systems, chat applications, etc.
- Applicants are encouraged to qualify their experience with specific web design and new-media development software in their applications and on their curriculum vitae.

The employee may frequently move to interact with fellow employees and/or clients. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Communication Skills: While performing Duties of the job, the employee is required to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos. The employee requires the ability to write effective and detailed correspondence and to effectively present information both in one-on-one and small group situations.
Mental Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to deal with stress associated with a fast-paced work environment and multiple priorities/tasks. The employee will be required to make judgment decisions and adapt to changing work situations, grasp and apply new ideas, communicate with various personalities at all levels and have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions.
Work Environment: While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an office environment, and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
