Genomatica seeks a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced, Maintenance Engineer to optimize and maintain performance of its state-of-the-art microbial fermentation research platform. The role will report to the Fermentation Manager and include responsibility for new bioreactor and instrumentation installation, control system configuration, instrument calibration, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, placing orders, and maintaining records, inventories, and schedules. The ideal candidate will bring a keen interest in the technical aspects of fermentation and the associated instrumentation technologies. This position requires a strong competency working with complex electrical and mechanical systems, a strong work ethic, and a satisfaction from performing high-quality work with constrained timelines. This role will drive efficiency and robustness improvements through careful engineering analysis of the technical systems underlying the fermentation research workflow.

• Calibration and preventative maintenance of instrumentation used in fermentation
• Configuration and maintenance of SCADA systems and lab data communications network
• Integrating new instrumentation for online data capture
• New equipment design, fabrication, and installation
• Take initiative in creating new systems and methods for increasing data quality
• Develops SOPs for instrument maintenance and operation
• Teaches proper operating procedures and physical principles underlying instrument function to other lab personnel
• Scheduling of maintenance activities and services by equipment contractors
• Drives continuing improvement efforts related to equipment
• Maintains inventories of spare parts and optimizes lab organization
• Follow SOPs and safety protocol

Education and Experience:
• BS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biochemical Engineering or related field from accredited college/university
• 4+ years of experience working with biotechnology laboratory instrumentation
• Significant experience configuring or designing software for supervisory control and data acquisition or comparable programming experience
• Ability to apply first principles to troubleshoot and repair laboratory instruments
• Experience working with OLE for Process Control (OPC) a plus
• Experience working with mathematics software such as MATLAB or Mathematica a plus
• Familiarity with biotechnology principles
• Skilled in analyzing basic electrical circuits

This position involves working primarily in a laboratory setting. As such this position requires the ability to stand or sit at the bench, the use of standard laboratory equipment for fermentation as well as computers and office equipment. The position requires communication with other individuals through a variety of methods. The ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs is required.
