ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Maui Program Field Coordinator position requires an enthusiastic, motivated, action-oriented person with experience in planning, conducting, and supervising natural resources management field operations in potentially hazardous conditions. These operations include surveying, mapping, monitoring, and controlling alien species and their impacts to native forests. The Field Coordinator must be willing and able to camp in remote mountainous areas for up to five nights at a time and operate in extremely rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions. Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury, as well as helicopter operations, so a commitment to safety is essential. The Field Coordinator must be able to organize and plan logistically complex operations and keep track of multiple details. The Field Coordinator compiles and manages monitoring data with a spatial database and assists the Natural Resource Manager (NRM) with developing resource management plans and reports. The Field Coordinator assists the NRM with training and supervising volunteers, interns, and contractors and building partnerships with other resource management agencies and organizations. Other activities include outreach activities; and vehicle, equipment, and facilities maintenance. With a heavy workload, the Field Coordinator is expected to manage his/ her time well and effectively prioritize day-to-day operations. The Field Coordinator is expected to communicate and write effectively. Occasional weekend work is required. This position is supervised by the Natural Resources Manager, and will supervise a Field Technician.

DUTIES

Plan, coordinate, and carry out natural resources management field operations which include: controlling and eliminating alien animals and plants using a variety of methods (herbicides, hand and motorized tools, firearms, traps, and other implements).

Carry out field operations which may require carrying a 60lb pack up to 12 miles and camping for 3-4 nights in remote, rugged terrain.

Plan, supervise, and conduct special-use helicopter operations that include sling loading, low-elevation surveys, , and remote landings.

Maintain ungulate fences, traps, and other animal control material.

Ensure optimal health and care of TNC Maui’s dog team by caring for dogs, maintaining kennels facilities and conducting monthly hunts in TNC preserves.

Collect, compile, and manage monitoring data and provide information on ecological threats and resources

Maintain vehicles and field equipment: Chainsaws, weed eaters, ATV’s and hand tools.

Train and supervise volunteers, interns, and field technicians in stewardship activities.

Conduct safety briefings for partners, volunteers, interns, and staff to ensure compliance with all TNC-Maui safety procedures, this would include a safety briefing to staff, interns, and volunteers prior to engaging in field work.

Ensure compliance with all TNC – Maui Standard Operating Procedures and safety procedures.

Assist with interpretive hikes, outreach events, and fund raising efforts to help build good community relations.

Other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and two years related work experience in natural resource management.

Experience with Hawaiian biota, Hawaiian conservation biology, native Hawaiian and alien plant and animal identification skills.

Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), field mapping techniques and monitoring & compiling data.

Experience with weed control techniques in Hawaii.

Experience conducting field operations and helicopter operations.

Experience with ungulate control techniques used in Hawaii: snaring, trapping, and strategic hunting with dogs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Working knowledge of Hawaiian biota, Hawaiian conservation biology, native Hawaiian and alien plant and animal identification skills.

Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and two years related work experience or related experience in natural resource management.

Experience using Window-based personal computers and ability to use various software programs including Word, Excel, Access, or other compatible software.

Experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and field mapping techniques.

Experience with ungulate control techniques used in Hawaii: snaring, trapping, and strategic hunting with dogs.

Experience with weed control techniques in Hawaii.

Experience building and maintaining game fences in rough, uneven terrain.

Experience with map reading and orienteering. Must be able to navigate extremely rugged terrain using maps, compass, and GPS.

Experience supervising others in the completion of tasks in an outdoor setting, where responsibilities include training others and the communication of goals.

Ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment, including power and construction tools.

Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as Wilderness First Aid/CPR, helicopter safety and sling load training, Hawaii State hunting license, rappelling, and Restricted Use Pesticide Applicator license.

Possession of a current and valid driver’s license.

Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

This is a full-time position with an employment duration of three years.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

Ability to perform physical work, camp and work in remote rugged areas, sometimes under adverse weather conditions or in inclement weather for up to a week at a time.

Willingness and ability to hike up to 12 miles over steep rugged terrain, carrying 60lb packs.

Work requires extreme physical exertion and/or physical strain to the point of physical fatigue.

Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury.
