Job Responsibilities

The Field Research Supervisor will help to coordinate field activities and technicians with the Field Manager as well as assisting in the field with the sampling of local embayments and nearshore waters of southern California. The incumbent will assist with field gillnet sampling and all associated preparation; identification and dissection of specimens collected in the field; maintain and repair sampling gear; keep thorough and accurate records; enter data; assist with tagging and transport of fish; assist with fish ageing studies; and assist in other aspects of the program as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of sufficient college coursework in biology or related field to successfully perform the required duties of the position OR two years of progressively responsible related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with common P.C. applications (MS Word, Excel). Ability to maintain neat and accurate records. Ability to lift or pull at least 75 lbs safely. Ability to organize and coordinate co-workers to meet expected sampling requirements.

Preferred Education/Certifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, with an emphasis in marine ecology and fish identification.

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

Experience with field sampling and survey techniques. Ability to identify local marine organisms. Experience with working on and from small vessels.

Working Conditions

Most of the work will be conducted outdoors either on a small vessel, dock, or under shade cloth. Most travel will consist of daily excursions along the San Diego County coastline starting and ending at Mission Bay. Transportation will be provided. Two overnight trips a month will be required. Occasional exposure to small sharks and venemous fish.
