GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Accountant will perform highly complex accounting activities independently to develop solutions to problems of moderate scope and complexity. Applies technical accounting practices and concepts as a phase in developing greater competence; work is closely reviewed for accuracy. In additions to the duties listed below, this role will work with Treasury, Accounts Payable, the Controller, Assistant Controller, Operational Accounting, Investor Relations, and various groups outside of Finance and Accounting to gather and share information required for monthly, quarterly and year end reports.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Assist in the preparation and filing of the Company’s XBRL and HTML SEC documents

Prepare various Form 10-K and Form 10-Q financial statement footnotes

Assist in the preparation of the Form 10-K and Form 10-Q financial statements

Assist in the preparation of monthly acquisition and divestiture reconciliations and journal entries

Assist in the preparation of acquisition and divestiture closing and post-closing statements

Assist in the preparation of monthly derivative reconciliations and journal entries

Assist in the preparation of monthly asset retirement obligation reconciliations and journal entries

Assist in the preparation of monthly Net Profits Plan accounting, journal entries, and reconciliations

Assist with monthly accounting close procedures, processes, and coordination

Analyze, reconcile, and maintain various general ledger accounts

Assist in the development of reports and routine analysis of M&A activity

Participate in the development of Company policies and procedures and continuing process and procedure improvements

Perform various internal and external reports as requested by management

Prepare and maintain desk procedures and company policies

Perform analysis of current processes and recommend changes

Assist in the preparation, analysis, and review of audit work papers as assigned

Assist the outside and internal auditors in their examination of SM Energy’s consolidated financial statements by providing requested information

Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities

Other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree from a four year University in Accounting or Finance is preferred

Minimum of 2 years of public accounting experience; Oil and Gas Accounting experience preferred

CPA or CPA candidate

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Excalibur or SAP software knowledge is a plus

Proficient ability to interpret documents and standards such as accounting policies, manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and others

Excellent written / verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to write routine correspondence and memos

Ability to demonstrate a strong work ethic, critical thinking and attention to detail

Proficient analytical and calculations skills

Ability to thrive in both an independent and collaborative work environment

Ability to prioritize and plan work activities, set goals and objectives, and use time efficiently
