GENERAL SUMMARY: Responsible for pre-certification of patients, patient visitation regarding registration and financial issues, answering questions regarding free care and payment plans. Acts as effective liaison with physicians/office staff and other hospital departments, promoting and supporting an excellent customer service atmosphere. Acts as a back-up for all admitting/registration functions.

3. Department Specific Responsibilities:
Examines surgical bookings, checking for appropriate level of service. Contacts physician’s office and/or insurance managed care departments when necessary to determine that pre-admission criteria has been met for desired type of admission. Obtains and helps coordinate admission approvals for all insurance requiring prior notification of hospital service.
Ensures compliance with Federal and State governmental and third party mandates such as admissions criteria, pre-admission approval, second surgical opinion, etc.
Maintains complete and accurate files relating to pre-admission clearance and second surgical opinions, etc. Updates and maintains accurate catalogue of all available insurance requirements as related to the admitting function.
Actively assists in the continuing education of MD/office and various hospital personnel related to insurance issues and acts as an accessible, consistent resource.
4. Admitting/financial responsibilities:
Acts as a back-up for the Admission/ Registration functions which include patient registration, placement and booking.
Maintains thorough knowledge of all Admission/Registration policies and procedures and is able to relay this information to other staff and hospital departments.
Visits patients or family members for any questions or concerns they may have regarding financial matters and/or to review and obtain complete and accurate patient information. Refers patient or family to appropriate areas such as Social Service, Case Managers, Nurse Managers when necessary.
5. Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
High School required; BA or equivalent preferred.
3-5 years Admitting experience, 1-2 years pre-admission experience, clerical and some billing experience preferred.
