GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Financial Accountant will be responsible for assisting with the preparation and filing of the Company’s Securities and Exchange Commission documents; accounting for acquisition and divestitures, derivatives, and asset retirement obligations; and preparing special analysis and projects as assigned. The position will require the individual to work independently and collaboratively with individuals in the regional and corporate offices.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Assist in the preparation and filing of the Company’s SEC documents; including financial statement footnotes, financial statements, and detail XBRL tagging of the statements

Assist in the preparation of monthly acquisition and divestiture clearing accounting reconciliations and journal entries

Assist in the preparation of acquisition and divestiture closing and post-closing statements

Communicate acquisition and divestiture activity with internal and external users

Assist in the preparation of monthly derivative reconciliations and journal entries

Assist in the preparation of monthly asset retirement obligation reconciliations and journal entries

Assist with monthly accounting close procedures, processes, and coordination

Analyze, reconcile, and maintain various general ledger accounts

Automate, streamline & enhance accounting processes and procedures as needed

Develop, document & maintain accounting and reporting processes and procedures

Maintain SOX Procedures for department processes as requested

Assist the outside and internal auditors in their examination of SM Energy’s consolidated financial statements by providing requested information

Prepare special analysis and projects as assigned by management to support company goals

Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities

Other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree from a four year University in Accounting

Minimum of 3 to 4 years of public accounting experience

CPA or CPA candidate

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Webfilings software knowledge is a plus

Proficient ability to interpret documents such as purchase and sale agreements, letter of intent, guidance, and various SEC documents

Excellent written / verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to demonstrate a strong work ethic, critical thinking and attention to detail

Strong analytical and technical ability to identify and resolve complex problems and propose alternative solutions

Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness while striving to increase productivity

Ability to manipulate and synthesize diverse information

Ability to thrive in both an independent and collaborative work environment

Contributes to their respective team and is open to others’ views

Excellent at managing competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change and delays.
