The Guardianship Project, one of Vera’s demonstration projects, is an innovative program established to provide model guardianship services to older adults and people with disabilities who have been adjudicated as incapacitated by a court and lack family or friends able or willing to care for them. The Project serves a culturally diverse and primarily indigent population residing in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. We employ a team of professionals, including lawyers, social workers, and property and financial managers, who collaborate to provide effective services and advocacy geared toward maintaining clients with dignity in the least restrictive environment. Guardianship practice generally covers a wide range of issues, including but not limited to foreclosures, public benefits, landlord/tenant law, real estate management and transactions, estate planning, medical decision-making, financial exploitation, elder abuse, and crisis management.

Vera seeks a Financial Team Manager for The Guardianship Project. The position is available immediately.

This is a managerial position also involving some direct client service, which offers an excellent opportunity to supervise a small team of finance professionals in a fast-growing non-profit demonstration project, while providing the chance to make a lasting and positive impact upon the lives of clients.

The Financial Team Manager will
  • Supervise the Project’s finance staff;
  • Assist in the development and management of internal fiscal controls and procedures in order to promote and achieve best practices;
  • Collaborate with case management and legal teams and executive staff to ensure delivery of comprehensive services to clients;
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of court-mandated client financial reports, and directly prepare such reports as necessary;
  • Oversee the marshaling of client income and assets, and assist in the management of client investment portfolios;
  • Supervise the processing of check disbursements from client and program accounts;
  • Budget and forecast clients’ financial needs;
  • Ensure that all client accounts are timely reconciled on a monthly basis;
  • Manage petty cash reporting, audits, and disbursements;
  • Work with tax service professionals and taxing authorities to prepare client returns and resolve tax-related matters on clients’ behalf, including tax filings;
  • Negotiate with vendors, entitlements agencies, and creditors as necessary on clients’ behalf;
  • Prepare ad hoc reports on various client and program financial matters, including but not limited to financial analyses in exploitation and fraud cases and an annual audit; and
  • Other duties as required to deliver high quality financial services to clients.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with a Master's degree in accounting, business, or related field, plus three to five years relevant experience in not-for-profit sector required;
  • Minimum two years’ supervisory experience, with excellent teamwork skills;
  • Strong interest in social justice for underserved populations required. Demonstrated interest and experience working with older adults and people with disabilities is a plus;
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills, including ability to reconcile complex and conflicting reports;
  • Experience designing and implementing internal controls, with ability to contribute to ongoing refinement of best practices in a developing program;
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, including pivot tables, lookup, and sorting;
  • Familiarity with trusts and non-probate assets;
  • Understands financial statements, financial investment products, and services;
  • Ability to conduct and supervise forensic accountings of financial records on behalf of potential victims of exploitation, and to convert findings into coherent reports for use in court proceedings and related purposes;
  • Strong teamwork and multi-tasking skills, and ability to perform well under pressure;
  • Working knowledge of tax filings and auditing practices;
  • Ability to respond quickly to the changing needs of a growing program; and
  • Final candidates will be subject to a criminal and financial background check.
