Performs design and finite element analysis (FEA) and welding analysis in engineering and designing large, complex structures, such as: PCAL, a large detector weighing 6 tons and consisting of layers of lead, a polystyrene based scintillating material enclosed in complex composite structure; Silicon Certex Tracker, consisting of sensors mounted on carbon fiber and foam based composite backing structure, and High Threshold Cerenkov Counter, consisting of large complicated carbon dioxide containment vessel which also houses large, low mass composite mirror and photomultiplier tubes. May work with vacuum and cryogenic equipment and beam line devises including beam dumps and cooling systems. Provides mechanical engineering support to a Physics Division Experimental Hall on a variety of assigned tasks.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Three (3) years experience in the alternative occupations of researcher or mechanical engineer or a closely related position.
Specific requirements: Must have concurrent experience with FEA, heat transfer, composite structures and welding analysis. Must demonstrate at interview ability to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary team. Job in Newport News, Virginia at Jefferson Science Associates. M-F. No Overtime. Salary from $63,627 per year.
