Testing Requirements: All applicants will be required to take and pass a written examination, a physical agility test, undergo a background investigation, oral interviews, and a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) physical and drug test. Copies of Certifications must be included with application. Certifications are required to be in effect by closing date of announcement. Job Summary: Protects life and property by performing fire fighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Supervisory Functions: May Ride-up as Lieutenant. Essential Functions: Regular and timely attendance at work. Responds to emergencies, lays hose, performs fire combat, containment, extinguishment salvage, and overhaul tasks. Performs emergency aid activities including rescue, and emergency medical aid. Participates in fire company drills and training, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials and related subjects. Prepares correct, accurate, and concise reports. Provides housekeeping. Inspects, maintains apparatus, equipment, tools, and facilities. Drives fire apparatus and operates pumps and related equipment. Maintains positive relations and works cooperatively with other people. Teaches Fire Safety classes for the general public. Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned. Assists in training new employees as assigned. Serve as "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or manmade disaster, or any other event the City Manager or Assistant City Manager(s) deem necessary. Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned. Education, Experience, and Licenses: High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience as a firefighter, preferred. Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter Certification Required. Copies of certification must be attached to the application. TCFP Driver Operator, Instructor and Hazardous Materials Technician Certifications Preferred Texas Department of State Health Services EMT Basic Certification Required. Copies of certfication must be attached to the application.TxDSHS EMT Intermediate or Paramedic Preferred. Valid, Texas Driver's License, Class B - Firefighter Exempt.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to think and act quickly, exercising sound technical judgment under emergency conditions. Ability to act effectively under stressful emergency situations. Ability to drive and effectively operate fire apparatus, fire and rescue equipment, and tools. Skill and ability to perform emergency medical care methods and procedures. Ability to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques. Ability to maintain discipline and adherence to the policies and procedures and standard operating guidelines Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Volunteer personnel, Volunteer Command Staff, Supervisors, other City Staff and the general public. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Principles, practices, and methods of modern firefighting. Emergency medical care practices and procedures. Methods of fire prevention. Hazardous materials and methods of identification, containment, and control. Operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment. Geography and characteristics of fire hazards within the City. Functions of NIMS and ICS. Knowledge, skills and abilities of Firefighter 1 and Firefighter II of the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1001, Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, 2009 Edition.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
