Firmware Engineer

We love automation. We design and build innovative robotic systems and laboratory devices used by pharmaceutical and biotech companies and academic research laboratories. HighRes Biosolutions helps scientists accelerate drug discovery, high throughput genotyping, siRNA screening, next-generation sequencing sample prep, biorepository science and molecular diagnostics with highly flexible, expandable and modular integrated systems, bench-top devices and consumables that are easily configured (and reconfigured) to create research environments conducive to achieving breakthrough results.

We seek an individual to develop software and electronics in support of novel robotics and laboratory automation devices. The Firmware Engineer is an experienced engineer who specializes in software design and development for embedded Linux environments. The qualified candidate should have strong experience with sensors, motion control, electrical for control systems and software development. A strong product development background for lab, medical or consumer products is essential. The qualified individual will work closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to design custom robotics and instrumentation. Simulation experience is helpful.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Develop firmware and high level electronics for laboratory automation devices
  • Conceptualize, design, build, test and debug devices and systems
  • Develop specifications, test plans, and other design/build documentation
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Develop and manage timelines and budgets for product development
  • Interface with customers for requirements, testing and training

Essential Knowledge and Skills:
  • BS/MS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with servo motors, stepper motors, encoders, and pneumatic systems
  • 2-4 years experience working in product development is desired
  • C/C++, Perl/Python, and Matlab familiarity
  • Basic computer communications (TCP/IP, RS232) and relational database familiarity
  • Experience with Linux and with real-time software
  • Strong problem solving skills, the ability to overcome unforeseen challenges quickly and effectively
  • Effectiveness as a team member and individually
  • Excellent communication skills
