The Meteorologist applies scientific principles to prepare weather forecasts and related products and effectively communicate with co-workers and clients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Review, understand, interpret, analyze and apply all types of standard past, current and forecast weather data, in a variety of formats, including textual, tabular, coded, graphical, pictorial, mapped and charted
Apply scientific principles of meteorology, hydrology, physics and other sciences along with mathematics, reasoning and pattern recognition to formulate predictions of future weather
Justify and explain weather predictions to colleagues, and engage in a dialogue with them to reach a consensus agreement on any differing predictions
Prepare specialized weather forecasts and products for each customer
Communicate forecasts to clients and provide appropriate background information
Monitor and analyze new weather data as it becomes available, and determine whether a change in weather forecasts is warranted. Discuss with colleagues to formulate a revised consensus based upon best professional judgement, revise forecasts and products for clients as appropriate, and communicate any revisions to clients
Special assigned areas of responsibility including Product Manager, Shift Supervisor, Task Manager
Special duties and responsibilities in quality assurance, client support, scheduling, research and development, or other areas
Service as Task Manager, with overall line responsibility for the entire forecast operations
Other duties as assigned
BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:
BS in meteorology or atmospheric sciences from a four-year college or university, or equivalent education and experience
Must have or qualify for professional membership in the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association
Demonstrated superior skill in weather forecasting and job performance in multiple forecast areas
Demonstrated leadership and managerial capabilities
Ability to write weather forecasts and commentary that communicate effectively and follow proscribed formats
Ability to effectively present information verbally and respond to questions from colleagues, co-workers and clients
Ability to work with and utilize mathematical concepts involved in weather forecasting and numerical modeling, including extrapolation, interpolation, second degree differentials of abstract and concrete variables and other concepts
Ability to analyze and integrate multiple inputs, sources and parameters; to incorporate scientific principles with pattern recognition and objective analysis; and to draw conclusions from multi-variate data that is internally inconsistent
