This position is responsible for total Forest Service program delivery in the county. This includes the supervision of two forestry technicians using PMPs & providing coaching skills, budget management, working with local government. Work will include the adherence to all safety policies, wildfire control, insect/disease control, function as initial attack incident commander & other ICS positions. Responsible for examining tracts & making sound silvicultural recommendations in the preparation of FM plans, collecting forest measurements, inspecting tree planting & site prep work, measuring, preparation of herbicide action plans. Will be responsible for Forest Management in Clay and Cherokee Counties. Work cohesively with area consultants & forest industry. Will conduct fire prevention & FM programs for schools, civic groups & others; investigates all forest fires in Clay County & take appropriate action, ensures adherence to FPGs related to water quality. Environmental exposures include adverse weather, forest pests, falling limbs, hunters, intense heat, dust smoke & hazardous debris. Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday – Friday. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Overnight travel & heavy lifting sometimes required.

Must have or be able to obtain NC Forester Registration with two years
Valid driver’s license and telephone required
NCFS is an emergency response division – work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Experience with the use ArcGIS. Experience with performing forest management and writing management plans for different forest types. Knowledge of cost-share programs and forest management accopmplishment reporting systems. Experience with hardwood silvicultural recommendations. Ability to organize and prioritize, excellent written and verbal communication skills; must be able to walk through rugged terrain over long periods of time. Must be self motivated; service oriented individual; willing to be a contributing member of a team. Must be able to be available 24 hours per day/7days per week. A skills test will be required as part of the interview process.

PREFERENCES Fire control experience in mountainous terrain needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited four-year college or university with a major in Forestry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the NC Board of Registered Foresters. Necessary Special Requirement; must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registered forester within two years of employment
