The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.Works with County Ranger to administer the county program. Programs include SAFETY: adherence to all safety policies; FOREST PROTECTION: wildfire control, insect and disease control. Will function as initial attack incident commander and/or other Incident Command System positions for emergency response on forest fires and other natural disasters. FOREST MANAGEMENT: Collects forest measurements, inspects tree planting and site preparation work, measures areas for cost-share purposes, visits urban forestry sites and makes management recommendations. INFORMATION AND EDUCATION: Conducts fire prevention, forest management and environment education programs for schools, civic groups and others. LAW ENFORCEMENT: Investigates all forest fires in assigned county and takes appropriate action, insures adherence to FPGs related to water quality. Occasional heavy lifting and overnight travel required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, intense heat, dust, smoke, and hazardous debris. Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday – Friday. Some work functions required evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Ability to organize and prioritize, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and leadership skills. Must be a self-motivated, service-oriented individual who is willing to be a contributing member of a team. Must be able to walk through rugged terrain for long periods of time.***Necessary Special Requirements – Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a NC driver's license and telephone. Employee must reside within Camden County. NCFS is an Emergency Response Division. Work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback.Preferences: Associates or bachelor degree in Forest Management. Experience in Forest management, GIS Software, using GPS units in the field, wildland firefighting/prescribed burning, NCFS Ranger Training.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment Graduation from high school or completion of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Necessary Special Qualification Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.
