The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.

Assistant County Ranger will work for County Ranger to administer the total Forest Service program in Durham County. This position will be supervised by the Orange County Ranger. The ACR is responsible for adherence to all safety policies and guidelines. Functions as Initial Attack Incident Commander in the county or in other ICS positions as needed on wildfires and other “all-risk” incidents statewide, assists in forest pest control, assists landowners with forest management planning and practices, collects forest measurements, inspects tree planting and site preparation work, measures areas for cost-share purposes, responds to shade tree/urban requests and conducts other forest management related duties as required. Conduct fire prevention and forest management programs for schools, civic groups and others. Investigates all forest fires in assigned county and takes appropriate prevention action, insures, adherence to Forest Practice Guidelines related to water quality. Normal work hours are 8-5, Monday-Friday. Many work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Wildfire and “all-risk” incident response require year-round readiness 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week and often requires 7-day work weeks. Overnight travel is frequently required.

**NC Forest Service is an emergency response Division: Work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback**.

**Residency Requirement: Employee must reside in Durham County.**

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Ability to express ideas effectively to individuals or groups, adjusting language and terminology to ensure effective communications with the target audience. Ability to work independently to achieve goals and respond to the changing demands of the job. Ability to provide direction to the overall program through positive interaction with employees, visitors, teachers and others. Ability to lead by example with strong work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to contribute to the efforts of the agency as a whole by participating and contributing to the NCFS program delivery.

**Necessary Requirements: Must have a valid NC Driver’s License within 90 days of hire and local working phone.**

Management Prefers: Degree in Forest Management, e xperience in forest management, wildland fire suppression, and/or using GPS/GIS software. Completion of NCFS Ranger Training Program Level I and/or completed Certified Arborist certification.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

If there are no qualified applicants, a trainee progression may be considered. Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment Graduation from high school or completion of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
