Assistant County Ranger works with County Ranger to administer the county program. Programs include: adherence to all safety policies, wildfire control and insect & disease control. ACR will function as initial attack incident commander and other incident positions for emergency response on forest fires and other natural disasters. Collect forest measurements; inspect tree planting and site preparation work, measuring areas for cost-share purposes, and other related duties. Conduct fire prevention & forest management programs for schools, civic groups and others. Investigate all forest fires in assigned county & takes appropriate action, insures adherence to Forest Practice Guidelines related to water quality. Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, intense heat, dust, smoke, and hazardous debris. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Wildfire and disaster/emergency response requires year round readiness 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and often requires 7 day work weeks. Overnight travel sometimes required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Ability to organize and prioritize excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to walk rugged terrain over long periods of time; excellent leadership ability. Self-motivated, a team player and able to remain calm under stress. Must be able to be on-call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week during high fire occurrence and natural disasters. *Residency required in Carteret County*. Necessary Special Requirements: A valid North Carolina driver’s license required within 90 days of hire. A telephone is required. Trainees would be accepted if there are no qualified applicants.
Completion of NCFS Ranger Training Program, experience in forest control, experience in forest management, familiarity with computer programs such as Word, Excel and Access.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment Graduation from high school or completion of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Necessary Special Qualification Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.
