The NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forest, protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees.
Assistant County Ranger works with County Ranger to administer the county program. Program includes: adherence to all safety policies, wildfire control, insect & disease control. ACR will function as initial attack incident commander and other incident positions for emergency response on forest fires and other natural disasters. Collect forest measurements; inspects tree planting and site preparation work, measuring areas for cost-share purposes, and other related duties. Conduct fire prevention & forest management programs for schools, civic groups and others. Investigate all forest fires in assigned county and takes appropriate actions, insures adherence to Forest Practice Guidelines related to water quality. Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, intense heat, dust, smoke, and hazardous debris. Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday-Friday. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Wildfire and disaster/emergency response requires year round readiness 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and often requires 7 day work weeks. Overnight travel sometimes required. Employee must reside in Pitt County.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Ability to organize and prioritize, excellent written and verbal communication skills; must be able to walk through rugged terrain over long periods of time; leadership skills. Must be self motivated; service oriented individual; willing to be a contributing member of a team.
***Necessary Requirements: valid NC Driver’s License within 90 days of hire and must have a telephone***
Management prefers: Degree in Forest Management, completion of NCFS Ranger Training Program, experience in forest fire control, experience in forest management, familiarity with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment Graduation from high school or completion of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Necessary Special Qualification Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.
