This position (County Ranger) is responsible for organizing, directing, coordinating and supervising the total forestry program. Total program delivery includes:

Forestry Management - Technical advice, forest management plan preparation, reforestation, stewardship, cost share programs, forest practice guideline, and urban forestry.
Forestry Protection - Performs initial attack incident commander function and other ICS position for forest fire suppression. Position gives technical advice to landowners concerning forest pest control problems and carries out law enforcement duties including determining reason behind the cause.
Information and Education - Gives presentations to school and civic groups and provides information to the news media.
Emergency response for wildfire or other natural disaster/emergencies requires availability often 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Emergency response often requires 7-day workweeks and 12 hours/day. Availability through pager/telephone. Position responds to all wildfires in county.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
An ideal candidate will have good oral and written communications with the ability to express ideas effectively in individual and group settings; ability to actively influence events and achieve goals; be a self-starter with the ability to take actions beyond what is necessary to achieve goals. Service orientation with the ability to listen and work to understand the customer (both inside and outside State Government), anticipate customer needs and give high priority to customer satisfaction.

Note: Requires residency in Cumberland County within 20 miles or 30 minutes of county office. Prefer candidates with supervisory experience, training, and NCFS experience. Prefer candidates with experience and knowledge of heavy equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Minimum requirements include graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum and four years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services.

Necessary Special Qualification: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.
