**INTERNAL TO NC DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ONLY**

The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.

County Ranger organizes, directs, coordinates, & supervises county programs to meet citizen landowner goals; oversees county safety program & ensures adherence to federal, state, departmental, division policies; functions as initial attack IC or ICS positions on wildfires or natural disasters; serves as the primary contact for landowners for forest management & urban forestry assistance; prepares written forest management plans; inspects tree planting & site prep work & measures areas for cost-share purposes; presents educational programs to school, civic, or other groups; investigates forest fires for reason behind the cause & takes appropriate action; administers forest practices guidelines related to water quality; manages county budget at the local level per division policy & county cooperative agreement; supervises 3 Assistant County Rangers, 2 Forest Fire Equipment Operators, and 1 Seasonal Smoke Chaser, Residency Requirement: Residency with Bladen County is required. Duty Station is Jones Lake.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Knowledge of wildland fire suppression techniques. Knowledge of Coastal Plain Silvicultural techniques. Ability to organize and prioritize, safety first, work planning ability, and excellent written/verbal communication skills Leadership skills are a must.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum and four years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Minimum Training and Experience for a Trainee Appointment Graduation from a two-year technical school with an associate's degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of related experience in providing forestry services. Necessary Special Qualification Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required within 90 days of hire.
