DUTIES: Back to top · The primary purpose of this position is to perform seasonal gardening and grounds maintenance duties.
· Plants/transplants specific flowers, shrubs, and grass according to instructions.
· Performs grounds maintenance work such as mowing, weeding, watering, pruning, and trimming. Mows and trims grass, weeds flower beds, and waters lawn and nursery.
· Uses and maintains a variety of hand and power operated garden tools and equipment, such as seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayers, spades, hoes, rakes, and mowers. Washes, cleans, oils, sharpens, lubricates, and performs minor maintenance on equipment.
· Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a sage and clean work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Back to top EXPERIENCE: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C; (e.g. WG- 5000,Agricultural, Forestry and Kindred Occupations Family , dated Sep 2004). Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Gardener without more than normal supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of seasonal gardening tasks, such as fertilizing, preparing seedbeds, transplanting, laying sod, aerating, pruning, trimming, and applying chemicals to plants.

2. Knowledge of grounds maintenance, such as mowing grass and trimming trees and shrubs.

3. Knowledge of how to apply fertilizer evenly to avoid under feeding or burning plants.

4. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

5. Skill in using and maintaining hand and power tools, such as seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayers, spades, hoes, rakes, and mowers.

6. Ability to recognize obvious plant diseases, plant insects and unusual or poor plant growth.

7. Ability to follow instructions, work orders and specifications related to gardening.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE : Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping. The gardener occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation and frequently lifts heavy objects, such as bags of fertilizer and grass seed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. Exposed to dirt, dust, mud, and sometimes to chemical sprays and dusts, may wear protective clothing, such as gloves, safety shoes, and boots. There is a chance of minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes and occasional possibility of broken bones from falls.
