BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS, CIVIL ENGINEERING, GEOGRAPHY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, PLANNING, OR A RELATED FIELD, TWO (2) YEARS OF MAPPING EXPERIENCE AND TWO (2) YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS; OR A YEAR FOR YEAR INTERCHANGE OF RELATED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EQUAL TO THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.
VALID V STATE OF GEORGIA DRIVER’S LICENSE OR PROOF OF MOBILITY EQUVALENT MAY BE REQUESTED.
The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be rated as qualified. INCUMBENT IN THIS CLASS PERFORMS PROCESS DUTIES RELATED TO DESIGNING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) DATABASES UTILIZING DATA FROM DIVERSE SOURCES. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE CONDUCTING NEEDS ANALYSES TO DEVELOP PROGRAMS AND SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS, PERFORMING SOPHISTICATED SPATIAL ANALYSES, AND DESIGNING AND WRITING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS
THIS IS THE THIRD LEVEL WITHIN A FIVE-LEVEL GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS CLASSIFICATION SERIES. GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST III IS DISTINGUISHED FROM GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS SUPERVISOR IN THAT THE FORMER PERFORMS DIVERSE DATABASE DESIGNS AND DEVELOPS ORIGINAL SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS, WHEREAS THE LATTER MANAGES ASSIGNED STAFF AND OVERSEES A GIS NETWORK AND RELATED DATA SETS. THIS SERIES IS DISTINGUISHED FROM THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERIES BY ITS EMPHASIS ON COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE USED IN GEOGRAPHIC DATA MANAGEMENT, RATHER THAN ON MORE GENERALIZED USES OF COMPUTERS.
DESIGNS GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) DATABASES FOR ACCESS BY MULTIPLE USERS. TRANSLATES DATA FORMATS AND IMPORTS DATA FROM DIVERSE SOURCES. CONDUCTS NEEDS ANALYSES TO DEVELOP PROGRAMS AND SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS THAT MEET USER REQUIREMENTS. PREPARES CUSTOMIZED MAPPING PROJECTS. DEVELOPS CONVERSION PROCEDURES AND ESTABLISHES SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF MAPS AND PLOTS. PERFORMS SOPHISTICATED SPATIAL ANALYSES. STORES AND ARCHIVES DATA ELEMENTS. PERFORMS QUALITY CONTROL OF DATA ENTERED INTO THE SYSTEM. DESIGNS AND WRITES GIS APPLICATIONS.
