This position will work directly with the Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Virginia Dam Safety Program as a GIS Specialist and will report to the Division Director of Dam Safety and Floodplain Management or delegate. This position will provide GIS support for Simplified Dam Break Inundation Zone Mapping for Low Hazard Dams, quality control of centralized Dam Inventory GIS information for dams of importance to Virginia, data exchange support for contracted Dam Monitoring System and related duties. This position is responsible for preparing raster and vector datasets for input into Dam Break Inundation Zone Modeling software, to streamline and automate GIS processes where strategic, to steward input and output datasets from a systematic statewide perspective, and to work seamlessly with the Dam Safety Engineer/Modeler and other Division staff.
A masterâ??s degree in a technology related field, Civil Engineering or related discipline. A bachelorâ??s degree in a technology related field, Civil Engineering or related discipline may be consider in lieu of the advanced degree with a combination of training and experience necessary to perform the job tasks with a high level of proficiency. Basic computer proficiency is a must, to include mastery of the Windows file system and above average skill with the Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Significant work experience with advanced GIS concepts, including mid-level Python coding skills in ArcGIS and solid SQL knowledge beyond ArcGIS, is necessary. Working well with minimal supervision and interacting professionally with others is a must. Candidates must have strong communication skills and be able to convey technical program details and policies to a diverse array of stakeholders (e.g. dam owners, localities, other state staff).
Advance GIS work, preferably work with large and computationally demanding statewide datasets. Prior experience interfacing with Hydrology and Hydraulics modeling software is preferred.
