Job Descriptions:
The Gardener will maintain the edible gardens at two Boys & Girls Clubs in San Francisco –: The Willie Mays Boys & Girls Club at Hunters Point and the Sunnydale Clubhouse. The garden at the Willie Mays Clubhouse was established in 2008 as part of the first afterschool program to become an affiliate of The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley. This position involves communicating with the Club Chef to plan the fruits and vegetables for each season to be harvested for the teaching kitchen. It may involve working with one to two Teen Staff in the day to day operation and maintenance of an interactive teaching garden. This position is 10 - 15 hours per week.

Garden Upkeep & Maintenance - 80%
Water garden beds
Implement garden duties (seeding, transplanting, harvesting) as needed, according to a seasonal schedule
Maintain garden facilities and equipment, including online irrigation system
Weed out edible garden beds and ornamentals
Keep side of clubhouse free of tree debris
Manage propagation, soil fertility, composting, pruning, irrigation, pests and disease management
Manage the garden at a level of production that ensures ample produce to the kitchen
Maintain ornamental landscaping bordering the edible garden including pruning, weeding, and watering
Maintain ornamental landscaping in the front and side of Clubhouse
Manage greenhouse propagation: Start edible plants in greenhouse: Pot up plants in greenhouse: Coordinate with Club Chef as to desired edible plants
Transplant out plants into garden beds
Maintain compost and worm bins
Prune back herb bed and ornamentals when necessary
Maintain ornamental landscaping in the front of Clubhouse which includes weeding, pruning, and occasionally replanting.

Facilities Reporting -20 %
Report any damage or needed repairs to the Clubhouse Director
Inform supervisor if gardening supplies are running low or of any additional needed supplies

Required Experience:
Knowledge of food, agriculture, garden to table concept
Experience in planning, planting, cultivation, and sustainability of an edible plant organic raised bed garden and small greenhouse
Experience maintaining native SF Bay ornamental landscaping
Experience and knowledge of irrigation system such as changing system settings, replacing and extending drip lines, repairing minor problems
Experience in establishing and maintaining ½: to 1 acre of edible and ornamental plants
Able to work well with others and follow directions while working autonomously

Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects
Ability to stand for long periods
Ability to walk long distances
Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects, which may weigh approximately 50 pounds
Ability to work with and in the proximity of equipment with moving mechanical parts
Ability to work outdoors and tolerate varying weather conditions
