Reports to: Director of Gardens and Grounds and Foreman
Undertake all aspects of horticulture both on the grounds and in the conservatory such as planting, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, mulching, and caring for trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, and other flora.
nspect and identify pest problems and treat such problems using Integrated Pest Management techniques.
Select, propagate, and purchase plants and design plantings using appropriate horticultural procedures.
Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light equipment, including making necessary operating adjustments or reporting need for repair or replacement.
Operate heavy power equipment as needed, such as tractor, mower, rototiller, roller, sprayer, etc.
Supervise assigned subordinate employees, including interns, temporary workers, and volunteers, instructing them in gardening techniques and in the proper use and care of materials and equipment.
Maintain records, including timely submission of plant inventory control reports and label requests; keep a log of plant collections and job-related activities, and submit quarterly reports to director of Horticulture.
As directed, perform various tasks in connection with general grounds and conservatory care and Brooklyn Botanic Garden events.
Design and set up shows.
Adhere to the policies of the Horticulture Department and Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Two (2) years of college and/or associate’s degree related to horticulture,
or three years’ full-time paid experience in
a. maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, and lawns,
b. operation and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment
or satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with the cultivation of herbs, vegetables, and fruits a plus
Experience generating seasonal herb and/or mixed border and/or crop schedules and successional planting preferred
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Experience and creativity in horticultural design
Valid driver’s license
Good physical condition
Pass a written and/or practical test
Obtain Pesticide Apprentice Certification
This job may be other than Monday through Friday.
