Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking two Gardeners to work in the Grounds Unit within the Drainage and Wastewater Division. These positions perform skilled gardening work and lead small groups in planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning and general care of flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns. These positions also oversee maintenance of 63 facilities/sites including some that contain Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). These positions will report to a Grounds Maintenance Crew Chief.

Job Responsibilities:
Perform grounds work, mow, edge and maintain lawns using riding lawn mowers, tractors, edgers and sweepers.
Landscape and direct horticulture work (weeding, pruning, irrigation, litter pick up at assigned facility and other assigned grounds tasks), restoration and maintenance of drainage system, natural-creek enhancement.
Perform structural pruning for pedestrian clearance, non routine spraying, planting trees, shrub transplanting and landscape adjustment.
Apply pesticide. Spray trees and shrubs. Direct the operation of spraying equipment and maintain records of pesticide application.
Remove and dispose of noxious weeds and invasive trees.
Repair irrigation system.
Perform vehicle pre-trip vehicle inspection and operate motor vehicle between and within work locations.
Drive pick up truck and other motorized vehicles, riding mowers or equipment in connection with work activities. Safely load/unload equipment onto trailer and off of trailer; secure and safely transport equipment.
Maintain flood control facilities, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, Environmentally Critical Areas and highly visible ornamental landscape installation.
Work with community volunteers.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in landscape construction or maintenance, or in the propagation and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs and trees at a conservatory, greenhouse, or nursery (Combination of education,training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability) Licensing and/or Other Requirements:
Driver license.
Washington Public Pesticide Operator's license, flagging certificate and first aid card are required after appointment. Desired Qualifications:
Experience with Plant identification and identifying common invasive and noxious weeds.
Good physical condition and mechanical aptitude.
Ability to work with power and hand tools.
Ability to lead, organize, document and evaluate the work of crew or crew member.
Ability to work in inclement weather and in heavy traffic.
Must have a strong understanding of safety regulations as they relate to drainage/grounds activities.
Must be a team player with a positive attitude who is dependable and reliable.
Good interpersonal and communication skills; willing to be flexible regarding job duties, changing priorities, work schedules and locations.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions; pay close attention to details; good record keeping skills.
Working knowledge in a computerized data system (e.g, Maximo or other comparable work management system).
Basic working knowledge of Word and Excel.
Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
Understanding of Natural Drainage System (NDS).
Experience with the application of Landscape's Best Management Practices (BMP) and Vegetation Management Plan (VMP).

Special Conditions:
Required to stand, stoop, walk, climb (ladder), or bend for extended periods of time and work outdoors in all types of weather.
Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
Occasionally requires handling or working with toxic-hazardous substances.
Must attend all mandatory training for Seattle Public Utilities.
