Work Site Locations: Visitor Center, Bruton Heights HS, Historic Area
Performs landscape and garden maintenance tasks/skills to preserve, maintain, and act as a steward of landscape in accordance with department standards; performs apprentice gardener duties; acts as working leader.
This position may be filled at the Senior Gardener level depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Final candidates are to present in person to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Employment Office a valid driver's license and an
Vehicle Record transcript (MVR). The MVR is to be no older than 30 days, issued by the same state as the driver’s license, and must cover the past seven years. Within 30 days new residents must obtain a Virginia drivers license.
General knowledge and skill in landscape gardening and maintenance.
Ability to professionally operate mowers, chainsaws, tiller, tractor dethatcher, sod cutter, edger, power chain and dump truck.
Ability to read landscaping directions and fill out reports; ability to perform topiary and espalier pruning techniques; good communication skills - generally gained through a high school education/G.E.D. or three years landscaping experience at gardener level;
Abilities to 1) bend, stoop,and kneel to perform work, 2) lift weights up to 50-100 pounds, 3) work outside in all weather conditions, 4) work flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays, and 5) be available for work on emergency basis seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Must posses a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record according to Colonial Williamsburg’s standards.
Must obtain a Pesticide Applicators license within a year of Registered Tech’s certification.
Four years degree in horticulture or agronomy. Landscape and gardening preparation and maintenance experience at colleges or universities, theme parks, municipalities, or comparable large institutions where fine art of landscaping and gardening is practiced.
