This position requires incumbent to perform non-supervisory work requiring knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The work includes preparing soil for plants seeding thinning transplanting trimming pruning, fertilizing, aerating, mulching, spraying, and dusting of grass, ground cover, flowers, shrubs and trees.

NOTE: This is a Non-Appropriated Fund Regular Part (RPT) position that includes NAF Benefits with 20 guaranteed work hours per administrative week. Incumbent may be scheduled to work 20-39 hours per administrative week.

DUTIES: Schedules and may be assisted by lower level employees in preparing planting areas; watering, fertilizing, planting, pruning and trimming plants, shrubs and trees. Maintains flowers and seeded areas to ensure attractive appearance. Determines quantities of plants and materials required for specific areas. Identifies and applies treatment for plant disease, insects, and related problems.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Knowledge of plants and gardening procedures is required to determine proper conditions and methods for planting and cultivating (types and amount of fertilizer to use, amount of watering and space for growing space, etc...). Skill in applying fertilizers evenly and placing seeds and plants at proper depths. Skills in operating hand and power tools and equipment (seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, and sprayers). Ability to recognize and treat for plant diseases, insects, and/or unusual or poor plant growth. Knowledge of fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides and the ability to read and follow direction in order to spray or dust with chemicals.

Conditions of employment:

1. A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection. 2. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

3. 4. All required background check of AR 215-3 must be successfully completed and maintained. Satisfactory completion of a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) that will be initiated prior to appointment to a NAF position.

5. Social Security Card must be presented at time of appointment.

6. Work is done outside, possibly in rain or in uncomfortable hot humid conditions.

7. Required to wear protective clothing such as gloves and safety glasses.

8. Required to work holidays and weekends.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies: Ability to perform the duties of a gardener, physical effort, knowledge of material, ability to use and maintain equipment, ability to interpret instructions, and understand integrity certification.

Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid experience or volunteer work.
