The GIS Technician supports the Information Technology Division ensuring City staff has the most effect resources and technology when dealing with geographically based projects. Under supervision from the GIS Coordinator, the successful candidate will plan, and organize GIS projects from start to finish according to the required schedules and specifications. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  • Assists GIS Coordinator with GIS related software installs and upgrades.
  • Assists City staff with technical support and training in regards to GIS related software.
  • Provides knowledge and guidance on geographically related issues and projects to other City staff.
  • Create and edit base GIS layers on a regular basis to maintain the most current and accurate information.
  • Creates project maps and display maps in coordination with City projects.
  • Performs spatial data analysis, database management, data conversion, research, data entry, and reporting as needed in coordination with City projects.
  • While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

    Position Requirements

    Education: Pursuing or completed a bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, or related field.

    Technical Skills: The ideal candidate will have experience in ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of products version 10.0+. A basic proficiency in cartographic design and a basic understanding of spatial information and Geography is required. It’s also important to have a proficient background in Microsoft Windows based applications and operating systems. Finally, basic technical skills and knowledge using Trimble based software and equipment is helpful, but not required.

    Physical and Mental Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift/pull/push/move/carry up to 30 lbs, and the ability to bend/stand/reach. They must also be able to travel to a variety of different terrains and conditions in the field while carrying GPS equipment. Between 15% and 25% of the time there is pressure associated with a project or activity deadline.

    Pre-employment Process

    The City of Eden Prairie conducts professional reference and criminal history checks for all employees joining the organization. In addition, the following is required for this specific position: driver’s check (must have valid Driver’s License and excellent driving record). All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the pre-employment process before their first day of employment.
