Serves as a professional geologist on a National Forest with responsibility for planning, administering and providing professional expertise in minerals and geology programs.

DUTIES:
Duties listed are at the full performance level.

Administers mineral leasing activities on National Forest system lands. Conducts geologic studies and investigations on a variety of projects where geology and mineral activities have an effect on development and/or management of forest resources.

Applies geologic principles to methods of prospecting, exploration, development, and mining and their related impacts. Investigates and determines the geologic limitations and capacities of projects in a specific geographical area.

Conducts comprehensive investigations, evaluations, and reports on ground water conditions for water well sites, geologic hazards, and unique geologic resources, such as paleontologic sites.

Participates on interdisciplinary teams for evaluating the impact of Forest Service and non-Forest Service activities on Forest lands.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

Bachelor's Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level; master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; or an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Examples of specialized experience are: Served as an advanced trainee specializing in geology and performed common qualitative and quantitative analysis of soil and rock samples; assisted in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific geological assignments that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that supported geological programs/studies; and/or assisted in monitoring mineral leasing activities, including oil and gas leasing, lease exploration, and operating mining.

GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; or an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). Examples of specialized experience are:

Collected, analyzed, and reviewed soil and rock sample data and reported findings in response to a geologic inquiry or as a result of reviewing a geologic map or report; participated in validity examinations and surveyed forest land to make assessments of geologic potential; and/or conducted studies or investigations on projects where minerals and geology activities had an effect on development and/or management of forest resources.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
